Stamford’s central location between major northeastern cities offers an easy commute to places like New York City. With New York City less than 45 minutes away via train and three train stations within the city itself, the commute to and from Stamford couldn’t be easier. The Stamford Transportation Center is home to many major transportation companies such as Metro-North and Amtrak trains as well as Peter Pan, Greyhound, and CT Transit buses. As of 2016, the Stamford Transportation Center has an annual ridership of over 8.4 million for Metro-North and 410,600 passengers on Amtrak. The Stamford station is the second busiest station in the entire Metro-North Railroad network, after Grand Central Terminal, and makes up 21% of ridership on the New Haven Line.
Over 60% of workers in Stamford travel less than 25 minutes to get to work each day. This is indicative of the number of jobs Stamford Transportation Centeravailable in Stamford; many residents do not need to commute outside of the city. However, the many residents who do commute to New York and other locales for work are able to use Stamford’s reliable public transportation system. The Stamford Transportation Center is an integral train stop, being the largest train hub in Connecticut in terms of revenue. CT Transit is also a popular mode of transportation, offering a bussing system for transportation to locations within Stamford.
Although many people use public transportation, the vast majority of Stamford residents drive to work. With the Merritt Parkway and I-95, it is easy to travel to and from Stamford on a daily basis.
Stamford is also conveniently close to several airports. Three of these airports are within fifty miles of Stamford: LaGuardia is 30 miles away, JFK is 41.5 miles away, and Westchester County Airport is only 12 miles away. With its proximity to multiple transportation hubs, Stamford is the perfect place for the frequent traveler.
